Of the Pastors’ Luncheon this October 9, 2019 at Messiah Church
Easier to Read Version
To: Charismatic/Pentecostal Pastors in the Virginia Beach Region
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Hampton Roads,
On January 1, 1901, God the Father answered Pope Leo XIII’s prayer and sent a new Pentecostal experience on the Methodist ministers at Stones Folly, Kansas giving birth to the Pentecostal/Holiness tradition. In the 1950’s David DuPlessis met with Pope John XXIII and asked him to give Catholics back the bible and let the Holy Spirit do the rest. When the pope agreed, God the Father sent His Spirit on main line Protestants and the unchurched. John Wimber was one of those people affected. In 1967 this wave of Pentecostal experience finally affected Catholics and birthed the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Pentecostal leaders, like Dr. Vinson Synan, partnered with Charismatic Catholics in the 1970’s and John Wimber partnered with them throughout the 1980’s and early 1990’s. The goal has always been to baptize every Christian with the Holy Spirit and equip the saints for ministry in society.
In the mid 1990’s a group of Charismatic, Pentecostal and Catholic pastors brought me to the Founders Inn for this fresh outpouring of the Spirit on your region. John and Carol Arnott have brought the Catch the Fire Rallies there every year for most of this Century. In 2012, Dr. Billy Wilson and many of the Charismatic; Pentecostal and Spirit filled Catholic leaders came to Regent University promoting Billy’s goal of having every Christian experience the Baptism in the Spirit by 2033, the 2000thanniversary of Pentecost. Two years ago, John Wimber’s library was donated to Regent University. It is obvious that something special exists in the heart of the Father for Hampton Roads: many have prophesied that the “next wave of the Spirit will begin in the place of the First Landing.”
Over the last few years the doors have been opening very wide for a greater, Spirit led collaboration between Charismatic Catholics and Christians of other traditions who want to use the gifts to transform Culture. Dr. Richard Roberts is a Christian Minister from England. He has been a co-leader in discussions between the Vatican and Charismatic Christians with the goal of establishing a grass roots working relationship among fellow ministers so the Spirit’s full power can be made manifest in our cultures.
One of his partners is a Catholic deacon, Darrell Wentworth,in Virginia Beach. Deacon Darrell was one of the ministers who brought me to the Founders Inn in the 1990’s. He is also a good friend of Dr. Mary Healy, a Catholic theologian from Detroit, who co-authored a book with me on Spiritual Gifts. Darrell brought her to Virginia Beach last year and Gordon Robertson promoted our work on the 700 Club.
On Wednesday October 9th, Richard Roberts will be sharing about this emerging relationship between the New Charismatic Churches (NCC’s) and Catholics. This is an important event for your region and the Church. St. Paul encouraged the Christians of his day to see that the gifts of one group were for everyone and all gifts were for the entire body. Catholics can learn much from Charismatic and Pentecostal Christians. But is also true that we have much we can learn from Charismatic Catholics: especially in light of the current crisis of truth invading all of Christianity: Charismatic Catholic theologians have been a true source of hope and stability for Christian laity in every tradition.
This luncheon is for leaders. It is being offered to answer your questions and form new Spirit led partnerships. It is also an opportunity to evangelize Catholics and mainline Christians by creating a plan to bring about what God the Father and all of us have been praying for: that everyone experiences authentic conversion and empowerment to transform culture. I hope you will attend. My team and I will be praying for you.
In Him and for Him,
Dr. Randy Clark
